Obituary of Donald Bell Hopkins
It is with great sadness that the family of Don Hopkins announces his passing.
Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Isabel Jean Macmillan and his children Leslie (Steve Ioannidis), Ian (Paula Bailey-Hopkins), Trevor, and Neil (Salinda Horgan). Don will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Zoe, Maud, Taylor, Owen, Reid and Garret. He will also be fondly missed by his loyal dog Sasha. He was predeceased by his brother Jack Hopkins (Margaret Hopkins) and his sister Georgette Sparks (Stewart Sparks).
Don was a teacher, vice-principal, and principal for 35 years with the Durham District school board. But his teaching career enabled him to pursue his true passion, coaching. Don coached track and field, volleyball, baseball, hockey, basketball, and cross country running, at the elementary level and the club level. He was a pioneer of sports in the Pickering area with the Pickering Pronghorns, Scarborough Optimists and many other community sports groups. He was a passionate Toronto sports fan and will be missed for his caustic wit, love of animals, bridge and horse racing.
