My condolences to Floyd's family and friends.
I have reflected on Floyd as I have gotten older. He is someone that swept in during a time of need and would go to great lengths to extend himself, as he did for me while in University. Although I was perhaps too young to fully appreciate his gesture and his integrity and the impact it had on me at the time, I will carry this with me for life. I hope to pay it forward someday and think of Floyd.
Rest in peace.

I've thought about Mr. Switzer often over the past two years. Not just because he was a great teacher, but because he was a role model for how to be critical thinkers who are also compassionate and open-minded. I still remember a class discussion we had on "freedom from" versus "freedom to", and such learning gave me frameworks for understanding the turmoil we face today.
He was a force for good in this world, and I think all of his students carry a piece of that with them every day.

Floyd Switzer was one of my favourite teachers and he had a profound effect on my education and that of many others. He was a warm, gentle and highly engaging man who took a very keen interest in all of his students' lives. We met for lunch for many years any time I returned to Kingston and I still remember the advice and laughter he shared.

Back when I was in high school, over half a century ago, Floyd Switzer was an intellectual force to contend with. He took the history syllabus and morphed it into present day politics, made his students understand that human existence is (ever after and in totality) politics. He was energized, interested, engaging, and connecting. Floyd Switzer definitely had an impact on my early learning that has been threaded throughout my life, and connected me with politics of my present day. We are all connected. I am grateful to Floyd Switzer for igniting my interest in politics.

Floyd is fondly remembered as an inspiring teacher, an educational innovator, and a passionate advocate for his students. I always came away from any interaction with Floyd with the sense that I had learned something new or was able view something in a different light. That was Floyd’s gift that touched so many people. We are all better for having known him.

I have fond memories of Mr. Switzer. He introduced many of us to a broader world view. World Religions, American History, and Philosophy were all excellent courses. Mr. Switzer presented the material in a way that both held your attention and made you want to learn more. He truly seemed to enjoy his classes as much as his students did. He helped to show his students different cultures, world view, and beliefs. He introduced many of the students at Frontenac Secondary to Philiosphy for the first time. And of course his knowledge of American History was unparalleled. He ignited in me a shared fascination of the JFK assasination. He was usually in his classroom well before first bell and after we had gone for the day. I can honestly say he was the best teacher I have ever had - college and university included. Thank you Mr. Switzer for all you gave to us your students. You have been and will continue to be remembered fondly.

Mr. Switzer was a wonderful and passionate teacher whom I had for World Religions at Frontenac SS in the late 1980s. I recall learning about the Holocaust as part of that class, and visiting the local Synagogue as a field trip to learn more about Judaism from the local Rabbi. This early understanding of the importance of learning about other cultures and religions and the ways through which we can respect others’ world views was very impactful, and also further spurred my interest in history. I am grateful to have had such a wonderful teacher during such formative years as this truly influenced my views of the world, myself and of others. Elizabeth Bardon (former student)

Dear Nadya and family,
I was sorry to hear about Floyd's passing. I taught in the Frontenac Secondary School History Department from 1973-74. I, and everyone else, especially his students, had the greatest admiration for him as a teacher and as a human being. He will be sadly missed.
