Obituary of Margaret Lockwood

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Margaret, passed away peacefully in her 101st year, with family at her side. She was predeceased by her parents George Copeland and Bertha Lennox, her husband Harry Holmes Lockwood and her dear sister Joan Hanes. Margaret leaves behind her sons Peter (Bruce Bursey) and Hugh (Anne), her grandchildren Kaylene (Mark Alder), Daniel (Nong Natachanok Chookasem), and Laura (Sam Dawson), great granddaughter Nora Alder and extended family in British Columbia, the U.K., Thailand and United States. Margaret was born in Port Hope Ontario and grew up in Winchester, Whitby, Picton and Kingston, where she attended Victoria School, and KCI. She spent many happy summers at her family's cottage on Lake Batiste near Bancroft, a joy she subsequently shared with her sons. She attended Queen's University, where she met her husband, Harry. They were married in 1942 and after Harry's return from military service in 1946, they moved briefly to Montreal and then to Arvida, PQ where they remained until 1978. After five years in Montreal, and 35 years as part of the Alcan family, they retired to Kingston in 1982. She was devoted to her family, who were scattered across the world, and looked forward to every visit. She loved to cook and her famous homemade soups will be long remembered. She was a prodigious walker, tenacious gardener, voracious reader and superb quilter. In her youth she was an accomplished pianist, and even after many years of not playing she could still deliver the complex chords of Stardust, when a piano was near. Margaret particularly enjoyed her time as a volunteer at the Agnes Etherington Art Gallery. At the age of 89 Margaret learned to use a computer and spent many happy hours emailing, Googling and Skyping. She called herself Cybergran. She was blessed with good health and independence until the end. Our family wishes to thank the staff and residents of The Royale, where she spent the last happy six years of her life, for their friendship and kindness. Heartfelt thanks also go to the doctors, nurses and staff of Davies 3 at Kingston General Hospital for the wonderful care she received in the last days of her life. Interment has taken place at Cataraqui Cemetery. The family request donations in lieu of flowers to Doctors Without Borders. Arrangements entrusted to CATARAQUI CEMETERY AND FUNERAL SERVICES.
