Obituary of Charles Kevin Hannan
Charles (Charlie) was born in Montreal Quebec, September 27th 1926. As a young child he lived in North Bay, Ontario. He is the eldest of 5 siblings (all of whom are now deceased). His parents worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The family returned to Randalstown County Antrim, Ireland his father’s place of birth in 1937. After his father’s death in 1940 his mother ran the Hannan’s Pub. Charlie returned to Montreal in 1948 to attend McGill University. He completed a doctorate in microbiology in 1956. He was an associate professor of virology at the University of Manitoba from 1956-1991 where he also ran a lab whose primary research focus was hepatitis. Charlie met his wife Pauline (nee Petkus) at McGill. They had been married 65 years when Pauline died in March 2018. They are survived by their 4 children, Peter, Eleanor, Tim and Michael and two grandchildren, Jake Hannan and Madeline Hannan-Leith. Charlie was an avid outdoorsman, food, wine and music lover with a special fondness for opera. He and Pauline were consummate readers and deeply knowledgeable on a vast array of subjects. Charles maintained a long list of charities to which he abundantly donated. He will always be remembered and he will be missed by his family and his many friends. In keeping with Charlies wishes cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at a later date. In honour of Charlie Donations can be made to Salvation Army, National Youth Orchestra or Indspire: (National Indigenous Achievement Foundation).
