Obituary of Katherine Louise Knight

Kaye’s family is saddened to announce her death, on June 17, 2021, at Rideaucrest Home, Kingston, Ontario in her 96th year. Our mother was greatly loved by her extended family. Kaye was predeceased by her parents, Grant and Marion MacLean, and her sister Estelle Anderson (MacLean). She was the beloved wife, for 50 years, of Rev. Robert Knight, who died in 2001. Kaye is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Barbara Almonor, son Robert (Judy), David (Deborah); by her grandchildren, Dana, Alyson, Katelyn, Chelsea, Billy and Doug, as well as her great grandchildren, Brookelyn, Hayley, Peyton, Bella, Brennan, Jake, Charley, Cooper, Mattix, Eliana, Bo, Sparrow, Cody, Eli and Madeleine; AND by her great, great, grandchildren Cali, Emma and Hudson.Kaye is also fondly remembered by the Anderson family (Uncle Wally, Bev, Ian, Kate, Jane and their families).Kaye was born in New Glasgow N. S. in 1926 and grew up on the family farm in McLellan’s Brook. In 1926, there was no electricity or running water, with electricity arriving in the area in 1937, and running water shortly after. Kaye went to high school in New Glasgow. To do so, she had to walk two miles to and from the train station each day. Horses for farm work and sleigh rides were the norm in those days, and trains were coal fired steam locomotives. So, our mother saw many changes in the world over her 95 years and became proficient with iPads and use of the internet.Kaye attended university in Halifax, graduating from Dalhousie University in May, 1947 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and began work with the Department of Revenue (now Canada Revenue Agency) in Halifax. Kaye had to give up this job in 1950, after she and Robert were married (as the civil service and most business firms, at that time, refused to employ married women!).Robert and Kaye moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick where Robert worked for several years. In 1960, Robert entered the ministry of the United Church and, from Fredericton, the family moved many times throughout the Maritimes and then to Ontario in 1966.In Ontario, Kaye and family lived in White Lake and Calabogie in the Ottawa/Madawaska Valley area. From there, Kaye and Robert moved to Spencerville, Orillia and Sudbury. Kaye spent her final years in Kingston Ontario near family.In mid-life, Kaye mastered the complicated handiworks of weaving, needlepoint and upholstery, reflecting her creative spirit. Late in life, she accomplished her dream of writing a MacLean family history, imbued with her love of her Scottish ancestry. She went on to write a children’s book for her family about her beloved cat, Tigger. Demonstrating an indomitable spirit, Kaye completed these books while battling Alzheimer’s Disease.Wherever Kaye went, she made lasting friendships and talked of those memories often. Kaye made a point of visiting her children wherever they went (NWT, Romania, Alberta and the US).A memorial for family and friends will be announced at a later date once COVID protocols permit such a gathering.Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society in your community, or to the Kingston Health Sciences Centre earmarked for the Hildegard Program, would be appreciated.
