Sandy and I met the first week of university in 1976 and stayed in touch throughout the years. From the first day at Carleton, Sandy struck me as an interesting person I needed to get to know. Sandy did not disappoint. We shared many stories throughout our university years, summer jobs doing research work to Nain, Newfoundland and the Keewatin, NWT, our first jobs after university, our childrens' births, their growth and achievements throughout the years, and then their own children, our grandchildren. There was never a conversation when Sandy did not talk about his love and admiration for his children, Sarah and Dan and his grandchildren. I will cherish the memory of sailing with Sandy on his sail boat, the Pirate King. To all who knew Sandy, he was an impressive person with a captivating personality, a sharp intellect and his wonderful gift of conversation that brought people together, making us feel welcome and valued as his friend. The Celebration of Sandy's life on Sunday, July 16th at the Brockville Yacht Club touched us all is so many ways, a reminder of the many people that Sandy touched in his life. It is an understatement to say that Sandy led an interesting and fulfilled life, this made Sandy who he was, our most interesting friend. Our dear friend Sandy will not be forgotten, he created a lasting impression on each and everyone of us. Sarah and Daniel, my sincere condolences to you and your children on your loss of your Dad and grandfather. May your memories of Sandy bring you comfort. We were blessed to have Sandy in our lives. My condolences to Sandy's family and friends. Although we had not kept in touch over the years, Sandy (or "Seadog" as we knew him) and I crossed paths at Hogs Back High. Always interesting and entertaining, this well-lived man was a true inspiration to all who had the honor to meet him. I am grateful (and better) for being one of those people. RIP Seadog.

So sorry to hear of Sandy’s passing. We worked together at the MVCA in the ‘80s. He was a big part of our team, improving the health of the Mississippi Watershed. Sandy along with others developed the very popular Purdon Conservation Area. We hunted together and made many a trout fishing trip into Algonquin Park. I miss those times. God Bless!

My condolences to Sandy's family and friends. I was lucky enough to have known Sandy through the Brockville Yacht Club. We served on the board together for a time, sailed together, and I always enjoyed every encounter I had with this great man. Sandy was a larger than life man, with a huge heart, great wit, and incredible kindness and intelligence. I admired Sandy and will miss him.

My condolences to the Hay family.
Sandy was a very special person as we all know. He and I had several things in common, as we both were educated by the Jesuits at Regiopolis College in Kingston and attended Carleton University. In addition we were crew mates on the tall ship the Mist of Avalon. During the Tall Ship Festival in 2012 Sandy and I had the 4 to 8 watch. One of our most cherished memories that we shared together was somewhere off the coast of Nova Scotia on the 4am to 8 am watch; the sky was partly cloudy and the sun was just beginning to rise and we looked back over the stern and on the horizon was the Picton Castle with all her sails up and as the suns reflection hit the sails they turned them the most crimson red one would ever see. Years later we often talked about that moment.
Sandy will be missed.

I interacted with Sandy off an on beginning in 1997 when I arrived in the area as Superintendent of St. Lawrence Islands National Park, and then as Executive Director of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve. I also saw him often and chatted about 'things' at Purcell's Freshmart in Mallorytown when we crossed paths.
I don't remember one interaction with Sandy where I came away feeling anything but uplifted. He made you feel better from having met him.
Thank you Sandy, and love and hugs to his children, family and friends for a life well lived, and for the contributions he made to this world.
