Ben Tan posted a condolence

Having heard the sad news only at end of 2023, I would like to send belated condolences to the family of Dr. Nicholas Diamant, who I worked for from 1980 until 1983. I had just started medical school in Toronto as a foreign student in 1980, and was offered a research scholarship position, involving working with a clinician-scientist one day a week and for most of the summer holidays for 3 years. I was extremely blessed to be assigned to Dr. Diamant's lab at Toronto Western Hospital. As a med student green in medical research, he took the time to teach and encourage me. There was also a range of other assistants in his lab, including PhD and Masters of Science candidates. I saw that he was patient, kind and gentle, yet individualistic to each of us. He insisted on getting details right, and always thinking through challenges. He was brilliant at mentoring us in writing research papers. He collaborated with other researchers in Toronto and Hamilton, and I remember our many road trips to brainstorm with our counterparts in those labs. During the summers, a highlight for us was the Diamant's annual barbecue at their farm in Georgian Bay area. Both he and Mrs. Diamant were gracious hosts. But perhaps my most lasting memory of Dr. Diamant was in 1984, after I had finished my term in his lab. I was to do a medical elective in west Africa before graduating. Because I was a foreign student, there was a complication where immigration would not let me leave and reenter the country. Dr. Diamant went out of his way to contact his MP, to enquire about this policy, and to resolve it. I was so astounded, yet not surprised that Dr. Diamant did this. I was allowed to make my trip, which increased my medical experience on diseases seen in Africa. I will definitely miss his cheeriness and smiles, his humanity and gentle spirit, and his brilliant thinking.

Nick was one of my early teachers many years back when he was at Toronto Western Hospital, and he helped show a young and very green medical student that doctors could be down-to-earth, witty, kind and humane. he was a great guy, and I was very sorry to read of his passing. My condolences to his family.

As a nurse in the endoscopy unit at the Toronto Western, I had the
pleasure of working with Dr. Diamant . He was such a gentle and kind man who made me feel like such a valued
and essential part of the team.
My two

I will miss
Dr. Diamant, but all the beauliful memories throughout the years will be close to my heart. My sincere condolences to everyone in the family .

To me as a resident, he distinguished himself in several ways. First, he was kind, in contrast to the popular mode of teaching at that time which emphasized shame as a driving force to learn. Dr. Diamant actually listened to us present rounds, responded to our thoughts, gave all of us a gift of Osler's "The Principles and Practice of Medicine " when we finished, and hosted regular journal clubs at his home, complete with cookies, and a stop-watch to make sure we completed our article review on time. However he combined this gentleness with scientific rigor: I still remember his grilling when I couldn't come up with a hypothesis to explain a graph in an article I presented at journal club. He loved ideas, especially creative ones, always reasoning instead of memorizing, working out management plans rather than blindly following guidelines. And he was kind. I wrote an article on ascites which even then I realized was pedestrian at most. Even though this was not his field, Dr. Diamant polished it up, added his name to it, and got it published in a peer review journal. The satisfaction of seeing my name in print encouraged me to spend three years doing research in a laboratory, close to one where Dr. Diamant trained (Thorndike Memorial Laboratories, Boston USA). It turned out that scientific investigation was not for me but his contribution to my education was an indispensable step toward what I like to think is a scholarly gastroenterology practice. Dr. Diamant made a difference to me .

My sincere condolences to the family. I first met Dr.Diament when I was a young physio at The Toronto Western Hospital. Later interaction occurred when I became a pharmaceutical rep for Janssen Pharma..a leader in Gastroenterology drugs and research. He was always gracious and welcoming. Years after I retired I ran into him in Portsmouth Harbour.. yes wearing his ball cap. And never will I forget the Joy vs Crap dictum.. a great rule to live by.

Meeting Dr. Diamant as a junior medical resident in 1987, he insisted I call him Nick. His passion, leadership, and inspiration contributed to my change in course from cardiology to gastroenterology.
Nick’s generosity of knowledge and spirit were recognized in the inaugural University of Toronto Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Dr. Nicholas Diamant Neurogastroenterology and Motility Lectureship this past February. The event was attended by Nick, family, colleagues, and trainees.
It has been a privilege to be one of Nick’s students and colleagues. His timeless contributions will continue to span generations.
My most sincere condolences to his brother Peter, daughters Stephanie, Jodi, Daphne, Andrea, and many other loving family and friends.

As a new member of the Department of Medicine at the Toronto Western Hospital from 1970-72, I shared an office with Nick. In fact, it was both Nick and Dr Gord Forstner who encouraged the hospital to hire me.
Nick was an outstanding human being. He was exceptionally intelligent, inquisitive, tenacious in his search for truth, careful, caring, moral and, not unexpectedly, a superior physician. He was a serious scientist with a quest for new frontiers and as a result, became a world expert on the neuroregulation of the gut, especially, the esophagus. He was held in the highest regard by his fellow scientists and honoured accordingly. Perhaps more importantly, he was kind, generous, supportive of his staff and colleagues, fun to be with and always, with a wide grin and infectious smile.
He had a deep love of nature and so enjoyed his farm and the contact with nature and animals. He was a pioneer ecologist before there was a discipline of ecology.
He taught me many things in gastroenterology and the importance of humility, honesty and ethical behaviour which characterized his life. I have attached a photo of Nick in June, 1971, when he invited the gastroenterology group to his farm. My wife, Karen is holding our infant son, Jon.
I shall always remember Nick with great affection as a model human being, mentor, friend and colleague.
